Fever Treatment

A fever may be a transient rise in temperature caused by an illness. A fever is a sign that something unusual goes on in your body. A fever in an adult could also be unpleasant, but it’s typically not the reason for alarm unless it reaches 103 F (39.4 C) or higher.

Treatment we Provide

These small fevers may even assist in reducing the number of bacteria that are causing your disease.

Medications available over-the-counter

In the instance of a high fever or a mild temperature that is causing discomfort, your doctor may advise you to take an over-the-counter drug such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, among others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others). Use these drugs as directed on the label or as directed by your doctor. Take caution not to take too much. Acute overdoses of acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be lethal, and high dosages or long-term usage can cause liver or kidney damage. If your child’s fever persists after a dosage, do not administer further medicine; instead, contact your doctor. Aspirin should not be given to children since it can induce Reye’s syndrome, an uncommon but potentially deadly illness.

Medications on prescription

Depending on the reason for your fever, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic, particularly if a bacterial illness, such as pneumonia or strep throat, is suspected.

Antibiotics do not treat viral infections, although there are a few antiviral medications that can be used to treat certain viral infections. However, relaxation and plenty of water are frequently the best treatments for most mild illnesses caused by viruses.

Infant medical care

Your baby may need to be admitted to the hospital for testing and treatment if he or she is less than 28 days old. A fever in a baby these young might suggest a dangerous illness that needs intravenous (IV) drugs and round-the-clock care.
